Pelekiton Cave deserves special mention, one of the largest caves in Crete. 5 km from Kato Zakros, it can be visited on foot or on a small boat. It is 310 meters long, there is a small lake at its end and in diggings in its interior human skeletons, as well as signs of inhabitants from the neolithical age were found.
Near the cave you can find an ancient porolithos (porous, soft stone) quarry and due to this easy to carve (pelekitos- πελεκητός) rock comes its name. This porolithos is what the walls of the yard of the Minoan Palace were built off.
